The U.S. Department of Agriculture will invest $10 million for water infrastructure improvements in 28 states across the country, including one in Breckenridge.
“USDA understands that safe and reliable water infrastructure is vital in order for our rural communities to thrive,” USDA State Director Edd Hargett said on the department's Rural Development page. “The investment announced today demonstrates our commitment to improving essential water services that will enhance the prosperity of rural Texans, because we know that when rural America thrives, all of America thrives.”
The USDA is funding 76 water system upgrade projects as part of its Water and Waste Disposal Loan and Grant Program. The report said the upgrades will benefit approximately 267,000 rural residents.
The Stephens Regional Special Utility District in Breckenridge will receive a $6.6 million loan and a $4.1 million grant to install 270,000 feet of water lines, a new pump station, storage tank, hydropneumatic tank (relieves pressure from well pumping), as well as 48 new water hookups.
The system serves about 5,780 customers in the counties of Stephens, Throckmorton, Palo Pinto, Young, Shackelford and Eastland.
