RUNNELS COUNTY – Runnels County Sheriff Carl Squyres announced his intention to run for re-election during an interview with Runnels County Register on his accomplishments within the past year.

In 2019, Squyres and his department arrested at least 181 murderers, sex and drug offenders, and other criminals while also recovering tens of thousands of stolen properties. One of the most notable arrests was Thomas Peiser in Miles, who received three life sentences in September 2019 for the murder of Tony Romo and two other related charges.

Under Squyres' watch, the department installed the advanced CopSync system as well as additional new technology for enhanced police security. All patrol vehicles are now equipped with computers that also come with printers and DL scanners.

Often spotted at many public events such as Hallowfest, the Ballinger’s Party in the Park BBQ cook-off, Winters’ DoveFest, Rowena’s Meet Me At The Square BBQ cookoff and Miles’ Cotton Festival, Squyres is dedicated to prioritizing the community as often as he can.

“Runnels County is a small, close-knit county,” Squyres told the Runnels County Register. “I want every citizen to know me and my deputies. I want to foster a good relationship between county law enforcement and our citizens.”

Squyres considers illegal drugs to be the county’s “greatest challenge” and is using his professional background in narcotics investigations to bring in other contacts to assist him in closing more drug cases.

Having worked as a deputy in the department for nearly 20 years, Squyres secured the sheriff spot during the 2016 election. His victory came after former Sheriff Bill Baird retired after 33 years on duty.

“I would like the citizens of Runnels County to know the Runnels County deputies, correctional officers and dispatchers are all incredibly dedicated to Runnels County and its citizens,” Squyres said. “They do not receive the pay or respect they deserve. I would like to take this opportunity to thank them all from the bottom of my heart for what they do for us, the citizens of Runnels County.”
