Four additional Building Improvement Incentive Program (BIIP) grants for Brownwood have been approved by Mayor Stephen Haynes.
Funded and administered by the Brownwood Municipal Development District, the BIIP grants encourage property and business owners to rehabilitate or renovate commercial buildings in Brownwood in order to attract positive marketability impact and perception of the city by updating business establishments and improving its aesthetics. It consists of a “match of up to $20,000 for approved improvements,” according to its website.
Haynes expressed his enthusiasm for the downtown area building improvements during a recent City Council meeting.
“Two of those businesses are new to the Brownwood area,” Haynes said in a release. “It’s been quite a while since we’ve had substantial movement downtown. The recent trend (of revitalizing downtown) seems to be catching, and other people are buying property downtown. That’s exciting.”
The additional four BIIP grants total $56,591 for local businesses and $271,373 for private construction investments. As of this month, BIIP has approved a total of $223,281 incentives. A total of over $2.26 million in private construction investment has been made by locally owned businesses participating in the program.
