The West Texas Council of Governments in Abilene has been awarded a $400,000 federal grant to help communities respond to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The funds will be used to “update economic development plans and fortify programs to assist communities in responding to the coronavirus pandemic,” the U.S. Economic Development Council announced in a news release. The money is from the CARES Act enacted by Congress.
“I am proud of the perseverance and strength shown by our communities coast to coast throughout this pandemic, and these funds will help provide West Central Texas with the necessary resources to make a swift and lasting economic comeback,” U.S. Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross said in a statement.
The Council of Governments will develop “a way to assess current economic injury status in real time and by quickly implementing measures to improve the region’s resiliency,” the news release said.
The West Texas Council was one of 850 agencies to receive the grants.
