It's not just homeowners feeling the heat from this year’s property tax increases; business owners are frustrated as well.

Among them is Jerry Kremling, proprietor of J’s Burger in the heart of Yoakum. His eatery is housed in a century-old building that has remained untouched for decades.

“My tax burden more than doubled. The appraised value was like $16,400 and now it went up to $38 and some change,” Kremling told Crossroads Today “So more than 50% of the value went up and all they could tell me is that you can’t build a building for that appraised price.”

He does not know how officials appraised the building.

“So it’s been holding my property taxes the same and I’ve been in this building for a little over five years now,” Kremling told the news agency.

Earlier this month, Gov. Greg Abbott called on local governments to lessen the tax burden on residents in the wake of the COVID-19 economic shutdown.
